Interact students celebrated World Interact Week in Grahamstown, South Africa on Friday, 5 November by attending and participating in the first Grahamstown Interact Summit, held at the Centre for Social Development at Rhodes University. Grahamstown has six active Interact clubs that span across private and public schools in the city, and the Summit was an opportunity to bring members from each club together to discuss past projects and generate ideas for service and leadership opportunities in the 2011 school year.
Over 90 Interact club members gathered, representing five of the six schools with Interact clubs. The event started with an interactive icebreaker, followed by a briefing about Rotary International and the Interact origins. Each school gave short presentations about their 2010 projects to the group. Two students from each school were nominated as representatives to serve on the 2011 ICOG (Interact Clubs of Grahamstown) steering committee, which is a way for the school clubs to stay in contact over the year. Guest speaker Ian Knotts-Craig, a teacher at Kingswood College, gave a presentation on service learning and encouraged students to be leaders of example not only in their Interact involvement, but in other areas of their life as well. Then the students formed small groups and brainstormed ideas for Interact projects in 2011. Each student received a Certificate of Recognition for attending and participating in the Summit. The Interact Clubs are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Grahamstown and the Rotary Club of Grahamstown Sunset.
