A Profile of

David Briggs

District Governor Elect for 2012/13

DGE David Briggs

Rotary Club of Arcadia

David was born in East London on 23rd June 1944, and is happily married to Rosemary. He has three children, all living in the UK, and Rosemary has a son, living in Italy. Between them they have six grandchildren, four cats and a French Poodle.

Before retiring last year, he was involved in the Retirement Industry as the Executive Director of the East London Senior Citizens Association, and is now the Past National President of the South African Association of Homes for the Aged. He has addressed International Conferences on the plight of the indigent elderly people of South Africa in Montreal, Canada, and in London, UK, and has been the Twinning Guest of the Pensioner’s Organization of Sweden.

He joined the Rotary Club of Arcadia in June of 1985, where he and Rosemary served as their Presidential Couple in 1990-1991. He is a Paul Harris Fellow and a Rotary Foundation Benefactor, was a District Governor’s Assistant in 1993, and led the Group Study Exchange Team to District 1270 in Yorkshire during 1995 before doing a three year stint as District 9320’s District GSE Chairman.

He enjoys “making-up” at unusual Rotary Clubs around the world, and has done so in Scotland, Italy, Canada, and Sweden. His most exciting Rotary Project was setting up a Rotacycling Fellowship and leading a 42-bike contingent of International motorcyclists around 5 Districts of Southern Africa in what became known as the South African Friendship Ride.

He presently serves as Arcadia’s Chairman of the Baillie Family Trust, assisting elderly people with their essential needs.

David enjoys traveling and has a love of nature and the great outdoors, particularly if experienced on two wheels. He is a keen amateur photographer, music appreciator, Kindle-reader, and a pet/animal lover, often combining his interests and linking them together with the help of modern technology and his laptop. He favourite forms of relaxation are walking along the beach and cooking, where he specializes in Weber roasting and wok related Oriental cuisine.

He is a proud Rotarian, excited at the prospect of learning more about Rotary International and The Foundation as he gains experience as DGE this year.
