Membership Retention through Fun & Fellowship

On reading our Rotary Coordinator (Zone 20A), Nick Phillips article in August Rotary Africa on “Membership and Club Extension” I was challenged to review my role and responsibilities in my club and district with respect to Membership. I firmly believe we need to focus on Membership Retention in tandem with extension, as a happy, active and vibrant club will surely attract and retain new members with more ease.

Joining a New Club brings with it new friendships, new challenges, new ideas and new opportunities. This is what joining Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth South has sparked for me as a member of District 9320 Membership Committee. PE South had 13 Members when I joined, one in his 20’s, three 85’ers and one other female member. One of my new Club’s projects is a quarterly Bingo Evening with a home for the aged and wow everyone enjoys BINGO once in a while.

What better way to focus on our Development than through a “game”. Attached is a “ROTARIAN BINGO” card (1.44Mb pdf file), for each member in your club. “ROTARIAN BINGO” is also a fun induction / mentor programme to follow. Each member can ‘purchase’ a BINGO card for a nominal amount of e.g. R5 that can go into the prize kitty.

Every member, including your older charter members, can be given 6 months to complete a BINGO card. On completion of each BINGO CARD the member wins a fun Prize decided by the Club Membership / PR Committee (Something interesting, Rotary / Club related and each club will have their own ideas here).

I believe that BOTH EXISTING and NEWLY INDUCTED Rotarians should “play this game” at least once every year (or once every 2 years). What a revolution this would be, we won’t have any more RINO’s if we all completed our cards annually, with the Rotary Four- way test applied!

I challenge you all to have fun playing some ROTARIAN BINGO and let’s light the fire within our members!

“You get the best effort from others not by lighting a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within” - Bob Nelson

Let’s help build the Fire within each other to achieve Bigger, Better, Bolder results through developing our members this coming Rotary year and in the years to follow!
